One thing I tell all my couples when it comes time to pick locations for their portraits is to stay true to themselves. I am always happy to help, but you really want a place that is YOU. I always use myself as an example, Kenny and I are beach people and love soft colors and flowy fabrics. We would like silly dressed in heels and denim and leather standing in the middle of a very urban area!! I love shooting couples there but it’s just not me and where I feel comfortable! When Megan told me her and Chuck really aren’t beach people and would prefer to shoot in an open field, well we had to get to looking! If you’re in the Hampton Roads area you know how hard a good field is to come by. Most are private property and if they don’t seem like it they are impossible to get to! Then I thought duh Erika your parents live in the middle of the area of the city where property is measured in acres!!! Lucky for me they have the perfect piece of 7 acres in southern Chesapeake and keep the back two acres “wild”. My dad will cut a path in the fields, but that’s it and it is PERFECT!! Oddly for the middle of April the weather was quite chilly but that didn’t stop us! Megan let me know she took my advice and had her ring cleaned for its closeup and I LOVE that!!! It really sparkled under the golden hour light. We walked and talked, avoiding my dad’s aggressive rooster, and got all caught up on July wedding plans, firefighter life and tips for being boy parents. I cannot wait for their July wedding!
